[3] In the Mishnah (M Sotah 5:3, ca 200 CE), Rabbi Akiva compares Numbers 35:5 "you shall measure from outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits ..." with Numbers 35:4 "one thousand cubits round about" to derive that the boundary that limits how far one may walk outside a city on the Sabbath is two thousand cubits. This distance then becomes the rule promulgated by such Jewish codifiers as Maimonides (~1135–1204) and Joseph ben Ephraim Karo (1488–1575).
