LSJ connect the verb with the word ski/ndaros which they define as "an indecent gesture," and which Hesychius (sigma1013) and others define as "arousal in the night for sexual reasons" vel sim., but also as either prosku/nhma ('kow-towing', Hesychius sigma1012) or proski/nhma ('sexual aggression', Photius sigma335 Theodoridis). LSJ also offer two other possible connections for the word: skinqari/zein, defined in Pollux 9.126, Hesychius sigma1014, et al. as thwacking someone's nostril with one's middle finger; and skindareu/esqai, defined by Hesychius sigma1009 as kakosxoleu/esqai, daktuli/zesqai, skimali/zesqai ('to play dirty tricks on, to give the finger to, to cornhole'; on the last of these terms see sigma 606). Other words that are possibly related are skinda/rion, apparently the name of a fish at Anaxandrides fr. 27 Kock (now 28 K.-A.), and ski/nqos, a word of uncertain sense applied at Theophrastus, Enquiry into Plants 4.6.9, to people who, along with 'divers' are cited as sources of information about seaside flora. 'Skintharos' is also the name of a character in Lucian, True Stories (1.36 etc.).
