Headword: *seshrw/s
Adler number: sigma,264
Translated headword: grinning
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[seshrw/s, genitive] seshro/tos ['of (someone) grinning']: [meaning] of [someone] gaping.
Greek Original:
*seshrw/s, seshro/tos: kexhno/tos.
Notes:
The headword is present active participle, nominative singular masculine, of *sai/rw, the verb that also supplies the headwords of sigma 262 and sigma 263. The first part of the entry gives the nominative and the genitive singular forms of the participle, which establishes the paradigm, so it is questionable whether either form is extracted from a particular literary source, yet the gloss that follows is specifically in the genitive case. For the nominative participle cf. Hesychius sigma448, which includes the present gloss, and which Latte ascribes to commentary to Philo Judaeus, Embassy to Gaius 353.2, but for the Suda more customary sources would include Aristophanes, Wasps 901 (quoted in kappa 1760), Greek Anthology 5.179.3 (Meleager [Author, Myth]) (quoted in sigma 427), and Procopius, Secret History 13.3. For the genitive form, the most likely literary source among the preserved literature is Nonnus, Dionysiaca, where the word occurs three times (3.173, 17.216, 23.51).
Adler reports that the Ambrosian Lexicon treats the entry aliter 'differently'; and for unspecified reasons she attributes it (or at least some of it) to the Synagoge.
