Headword: Συμπίπτειν
Adler number: sigma,1393
Translated headword: to engage directly, to fight at close quarters
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] to come into direct conflict. "And they armed them and ordered [them] to engage directly in battle."[1]
Greek Original:
Συμπίπτειν: μάχην συνάπτειν. οἱ δὲ ὥπλιζον αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐκέλευον ἐς μάχην συμπίπτειν.
[1] Quotation not identified by Adler but identifiable via the TLG as an approximation of Philostratus, Life of Apollonius of Tyana 4.22; see on this Theodoridis in his Photius edition, vol.II p.XCVIII. (In the original the infinitive is ξυμπίπτειν rather than the Suda's συμπίπτειν (twice over), and the phrase 'in battle' does not appear; it has perhaps crept in from the gloss.)
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; military affairs; rhetoric
