Adler number: sigma,1313
Translated headword: to go skin-to-skin with
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to be intimate with. For Zeno of Kition received a prophecy when he was inquiring of the oracle concerning his life, how he might become happy [eu)dai/mwn] if he were to go skin-to-skin with the dead--meaning with the books of the ancients.[1] That is, to practice one's studies and to nurture the kingly soul with words.[2]

Greek Original:

Notes:
[1] cf. zeta 79. The headword verb has sometimes been understood as referring to the skin's color, but Prof David Westberg persuasively argues (per ep.) for the interpretation given here, which makes the best sense of the passage as a whole. Compare also LSJ s.v.
[2] (Aristotle likewise associates eu)daimoni/a with the contemplative life: Nicomachean Ethics 1177b15). The phrase yuxh\n th\n basi/leian should perhaps read yuxh\n th=s basilei/as: so Jonathan Toup (1713-1785), citing Matthew 13:19 ('the word of the kingdom'). In any event, this sentence puts a favourable gloss on the headword, as used in this particular context.
