Headword: *stoixw=men
Adler number: sigma,1247
Translated headword: we should agree; let us agree
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] we should obey, we should be satisfied by. "Let us not agree with ourselves," say the fathers.[1]
Greek Original:
*stoixw=men: peiqw/meqa, a)reskw/meqa. mh\ stoixw=men e(autoi=s, fasi\n oi( pate/res.
Notes:
The headword is present active subjunctive, first person plural, of stoixe/w (cf. sigma 1244), literally 'I stand in a row'. Morphologically it could also be indicative, but the glosses are subjunctive, and it appears as a subjunctive both in the quotation given here, and in the passage that may be the target of the commentary, Galatians 5:25 -- by far the most commented-upon occurrence of this particular form of the verb.
[1] These words occur in Dorotheus, Doctrinae diversae 5.61.5: Scripture "makes us secure, lest we agree with ourselves, lest we consider ourselves intelligent." But the style of the quotation suggests that it may be a less specific citation of things generally said by the church fathers. Adler also cites Monumenta Ecclesia Graecae (Coteler) 1.758.
