Adler number: rho,39
Translated headword: to dash, to strike
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning to overthrow.[1] Thus Apollodorus [sc. uses the word].[2]
Greek Original:
*(ra/cai: a)nti\ tou= katabalei=n. ou(/tws *)apollo/dwros.
Notes:
= Photius rho39 Theodoridis.
[1] The headword is aorist active infinitive of r(a/ssw/r(a/ttw. According to LSJ, the alpha is probably long by nature, since the Ionic form is r(h/ssw (also in Koine). In that case, the aorist infinitive would be expected to have a circumflex accent (r(a=cai).
[2] Taken by some to mean Apollodorus of Athens FGrH 244 (F270, contextless); however, there were also 2 comic poets of this name, A. of Gela (alpha 3405) and A. of Karystos, and the latter has been invoked here (fr. 22 Kock, now 23 K.-A.). For the sense, compare r(a/cantes in Demosthenes 54.8.
