Notes:
One of the epithets of Athena was Paeonia (Healer); cf. Pausanias 1.2.5 (web address 1). Paionia happens to be a region in northern Macedonia (Barrington Atlas map 51 grid A1), but there is no evidence that links the geographical area to medicines, therapeutics, or healing practices of any renown. Also, Paean (Paeon) is the physician to the gods in Homer Iliad 5.401 (web address 2) and a epithet of Apollo; cf. LSJ s.v. *paia/n (web address 3).
[1] = Eudemus 170.30; cf. Synagoge, Photius pi43 Theodoridis (with alternative spelling of the headword). For the 'drug' sense see already pi 882.
[2] From [Julian], Epistle 190.
[3] Greek Anthology 6.203-2-3 (Lacon or Philip of Thessalonica); also quoted at gamma 428, omicroniota 88, pi 3256. Find another extract from this epigram at delta 959. On its attribution see gamma 428 note.
