Headword: *pai/dousa
Adler number: pi,869
Translated headword: with child
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
or [sc. she who is] rich in children: [meaning she who is] pregnant.[1]
Greek Original:
*pai/dousa h)\ *paidou=ssa: e)gku/mwn.
Notes:
The primary headword, transmitted as pai/dousa, is attested only here; however, the gloss (see n. 1 below) shows it to be a mistaken accentuation of paidou=sa. This latter feminine adjective occurs in, for example, Hippocrates, De natura muliebri 99.1-3, and means pregnant; see LSJ s.v. paidou=s.
The second (alternative) headword paidou=ssa, in certain Suda manuscripts only, also occurs only here. It is the feminine form of the adjective paidou=s, -ou=ssa, -ou=n, which is contracted from paido/eis, -o/essa, -o/en (rich in children); see LSJ s.v.
[1] paidou=sa has the same glossing in the Synagoge, Lexica Segueriana 325.17, and Photius, Lexicon pi33 Theodoridis; cf. the scholia to Sophocles, Trachiniae 308.
