Headword: Παιδάριον
Adler number: pi,847
Translated headword: little child
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The [sc. Attic] orators have used the word[1] not only in reference to males but also in reference to young girls. Hyperides in the [speech] In Reply to Timandros [writes]: "for when these had been left, two brothers and two sisters, orphaned in respect of their father and mother, and little children".[2]
Notes:
[1] A diminutive of παῖς . Also used outside oratory: see LSJ s.v.
[2] Hyperides fr. 164 Jensen. Jensen (like his Teubner predecessor Blass) emended it substantially from the words transmitted here, eliminating the brothers in the process -- but wrongly: this very passage has now enabled Natalie Tchernetska (see bibliography) to identify one of the non-Archimedian texts on the "Archimedes Palimpsest" (web address 1 below) as part of this speech.
