Headword: Παρεῖτε
Adler number: pi,608
Translated headword: you might be by, you might be present alongside
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] you are becoming near.
Greek Original:
Παρεῖτε: παραγίνεσθε.
The headword looks like a present optative, second person plural, of the verb πάρειμι (from εἰμί "I am"), but the gloss is either present indicative or imperative. Adler reports that ms A has παρῆτε (imperfect) glossed by παρεγένεσθε (aorist): cf. pi 640. Hesychius (Schmidt) has πάρ[ε]ιτε : παρέλθετε (imperative). Photius pi363 Theodoridis has παρεῖτε : παραγίνεσθαι (infinitive, presumably a mistake for the imperative παραγίνεσθε , which is the reading of the Lexica Segueriana). However, Theodoridis endorses Naber's view that the authentic headword should be πάριτε (from εἶμι "go"), perhaps quoted from Euripides or Aristophanes.
cf. generally pi 594, pi 595, pi 601 (end), pi 605, pi 634, pi 635, pi 640.
