Xenophon [writes]: "with the soldiers shouting ['the sea! the sea!'] and giving the word[.] Then of course everyone began to run."[2] And elsewhere: "of whoever they were given word the soldiers bring stones and make a large mound. Here they set up a mass of skins and staffs and wicker shields."[3]

The headword -- which does not appear in either of the quotations given (but is evidently quoted from somewhere else, perhaps
Herodotus 3.8.2) -- is present indicative (or subjunctive) third person singular active, or second person singular middle, of
pareggua/w.
