Headword: Parenguai
Adler number: pi,517
Translated headword: entrusts, gives word
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Used] with a dative. [Meaning he/she/it] hands over, communicates, advises, deposits.[1]
Xenophon [writes]: "with the soldiers shouting ['the sea! the sea!'] and giving the word[.] Then of course everyone began to run."[2] And elsewhere: "of whoever they were given word the soldiers bring stones and make a large mound. Here they set up a mass of skins and staffs and wicker shields."[3]
Greek Original:
Parenguai: dotikêi. paradidôsi, parangellei, parainei, parakatatithetai. Xenophôn: boôntôn tôn stratiôtôn kai parenguôntôn, entha dê etheon hapantes. kai authis: hotou dê parenguêsanto hoi stratiôtai pherousi lithous kai poiousi kolônon megan. entautha anetithesan dermatôn plêthos kai baktêrias kai gerra.
Notes:
The headword -- which does not appear in either of the quotations given (but is evidently quoted from somewhere else, perhaps Herodotus 3.8.2) -- is present indicative (or subjunctive) third person singular active, or second person singular middle, of pareggua/w.
The pair of quotations given illustrate the sense of the verb noted in LSJ s.v.
For other forms of the same verb see pi 518 and pi 519.
[1] = Synagoge, Photius pi338 Theodoridis; cf. Hesychius pi751.
[2] An abridged version of Xenophon, Anabasis 4.7.24 (the famous "Thalatta! Thalatta!" scene).
[3] An abridged and garbled version of Xenophon, Anabasis 4.7.25 (a continuation of the previous quotation): "of whoever they were given word" (o(/tou dh\ paregguh/santo) should be "with someone having given the word" (o(/tou dh\ paregguh/santos). This is probably a scribal error rather than a fault in understanding (note the lack of augment on paregguh/santo).
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; historiography; history; military affairs; science and technology; trade and manufacture
