Headword: Παραιτεῖσθαι
Adler number: pi,504
Translated headword: to beseech
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to entreat, to beg pardon.[1]
"But on the point of killing him he released him, since Parysatis had beseeched him and preserved the satrapy for him."[2]
And elsewhere: "he rescues Derketaios from death having beseeched his mother."[3]
Notes:
The headword is the present middle infinitive of παραιτέομαι . In the quotations supplied this form does not appear, but related participles do.
For other forms of this verb see pi 505 to pi 510.
[1] = Synagoge, and other references at Photius pi235 Theodoridis.
[2] A grammatically incorrect version of what is also found in xi 48: Parysatis, the mother of Artaxerxes IV and Cyrus the Younger (pi 742), saves Cyrus from execution at his brother's hands. The source is unidentifiable. Here Parysatis also preserves Cyrus' position as satrap (σατραπείαν ); in xi 48 she preserves his command of an army (στρατείαν ); cf. Xenophon, Anabasis 1.1.3.
[3] There are two figures attested with the name Derketaios: a bodyguard of Marcus Antonius who brought news of Antonius' death to Caesar (Plutarch, Antonius 78), and a subordinate of Semiramis at sigma 220. The second of these is the one relevant here, according to Favuzzi [below], who connects this entry with omega 91 (q.v.).
