Headword: Πῦος
Adler number: pi,3179
Translated headword: beestings
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] that which has been milked before the milk, metabolized blood, milk itself, milky liquid. Some [say it is] fresh milk boiled with yesterday's milk. Aristophanes [writes]: "there is also some beestings inside and four hares."[1]
= Synagoge pi832 (Lexica Segueriana 357.14), and Photius pi1541 Theodoridis, except that those lexica (as well as Hesychius pi4377) have the headword as πυόν , which is either the accusative form of the current headword (with a different accent) or a neuter nominative/accusative variant. (Theodoridis presents it as non-comittal Πυον .) Consequently, commentary on the Aristophanes passage quoted (see note 1 below) is probably not the source of this entry -- though it may have inspired the form of the lemma -- and the glossing shows confusion with pi 3178 (q.v.).
