Headword: *pulaista/tous
Adler number: pi,3165
Translated headword: Pylai-men, Pylae-men
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Those who neither say nor do anything sound; [sc. so named] because of the attendance of men of this kind at the aforementioned place.
Greek Original:
*pulaista/tous: tou\s mhde\n u(gie\s mh/te le/gontas mh/te pra/ssontas: dia\ to\ paragene/sqai toiou/tous tina\s a)nqrw/pous ei)s to\n proeirhme/non to/pon.
Notes:
The headword, an accusative plural (presumably quoted from somewhere), is transmitted as pulaista/tous here and (with the same gloss) in Photius pi1533 Theodoridis; Hesychius pi4341, correctly, has pulaiasta/s (with the gloss 'liars'). LSJ s.v. glosses the word as 'buffoons, mountebanks, such as flocked to Pylae and Delphi during the Amphictionic assembly'.
For Pylai/Pylae see pi 3161.
