and Pylaia and Pylagoras. Pylai ['Gates'] is what they call the Thermopylai. They acquired this name because of the narrowness of this entrance for travellers from Thessaly into Phokis. But Pylaia was the name for the synod of the Amphictyones[1] at Pylai. Certain men used to be sent from the cities participating in the Amphictyony, and they were called Pylagorai.

Πύλαι καὶ Πυλαία καὶ Πυλαγόρας: Πύλαι μὲν καλοῦνται αἱ Θερμοπύλαι. ἐκλήθησαν δὲ οὕτως διὰ τὸ στενὴν εἶναι ταύτην εἴσοδον ἀπὸ Θετταλίας εἰς τὴν Φωκίδα πορευομένοις. Πυλαία δὲ ἐκαλεῖτο ἡ εἰς τὰς Πύλας σύνοδος τῶν Ἀμφικτυόνων. ἐπέμποντο δὲ ἐκ τῶν πόλεων τῶν μετεχουσῶν τῆς Ἀμφικτυονίας τινές, οἵπερ ἐκαλοῦντο Πυλαγόραι.
