Headword: *pugmali=nos
Adler number: pi,3112
Translated headword: Pygmalinos, Pygmalinus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A proper name.[1] Also [sc. attested is] *pugmali/wnos ["Pygmalion's"].[2]
Greek Original:
*pugmali=nos: o)/noma ku/rion. kai\ *pugmali/wnos.
Notes:
[1] Attested only here.
[2] See generally OCD(4) s.v. Pygmalion for the two mythological figures of that name, from the eastern Mediterranean. The better-known is the king of Cyprus who conceived a fetishistic passion for the ivory cult-statue of Aphrodite/Astarte (but see Ovid, Metamorphoses 10.243ff. at web address 1 for another version). Here in the Suda the name is in the genitive case and so evidently quoted from somewhere (e.g. Philostratus, Life of Apollonius of Tyana 5.5).
