Headword: *poinh/n
Adler number: pi,3095
Translated headword: penalty
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"Those of the Sacae that he took as prisoners of war he impaled on stakes and desecrated, wishing once again to exact penalties for the murder of his father."[1]
Greek Original:
*poinh/n: ou(\s de\ la/boi *sa/kas ai)xmalw/tous, a)neskolo/pize kai\ h)|ki/zeto, kai\ au)=qis poina\s tou= patro\s fo/nou pra/casqai qe/lwn.
Notes:
As with pi 3094, the headword is accusative singular of the noun poinh/ (see pi 3092 and, more generally, every entry between pi 3091 and pi 3096 inclusive). It must be quoted from somewhere, but not from the quotation given, which has the accusative plural.
[1] As Adler notes, A.G. Roos attributes this to Arrian but did not include it as one of the fragments in his edition. She also cites 'FGrHist [vol.] 2 Comm. p.568'; there Jacoby quotes this and four other Suda entries (alpha 4015, beta 589, theta 439, sigma 278) in his discussion of Arrian FGrH 156 F30-32. The material is paralleled in Justin 42.2.1-5, and the Suda's 'he' is Mithridates II. For the Sacae/Sakai, see under sigma 33.
