Headword: Πτύξωμαι
Adler number: pi,3063
Translated headword: I enfold myself
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Aristophanes in Clouds [writes]: "[not] before I enfold myself with this, so I don't get soaked." Meaning I will cover myself, I will shelter myself.[1]
And Sophocles [writes]: "he, when he suddenly hears a bitter sound, enfolding his hands on them said, 'o children'."[2]
Greek Original:
Πτύξωμαι: Ἀριστοφάνης Νεφέλαις: πρὶν ἂν τουτὶ πτύξωμαι, μὴ καταβρεχθῶ. ἀντὶ τοῦ καλύψομαι, σκεπάσομαι. καὶ Σοφοκλῆς: ὁ δ', ὡς ἀκούει φθόγγον ἐξαίφνης πικρόν, πτύξας ἐπ' αὐταῖς χεῖρας εἶπεν, ὦ τέκνα.
Notes:
The headword is aorist subjunctive middle, first person singular, of the verb πτύσσω (for related words see the other entries from pi 3061 through pi 3063 and pi 3066 and pi 3067). Presumably the first quotation is the source of the lemma, where it is used in a general temporal clause; hence the translation need not be different from an indicative (see n. 1).
[1] Aristophanes, Clouds 267, with comments from the scholia. Here the subjunctive headword is glossed with future indicative verbs.
[2] Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus 1060-61, using the aorist active participle of the same verb.
