Headword: Πτίλλος
Adler number: pi,3028
Translated headword: blepharitic
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] one who is runny in the eyelids.
Greek Original:
Πτίλλος: ὁ μαδαρὸς τοῖς βλεφάροις.
Note:
= Synagoge pi762; Photius, Lexicon pi1477 Theodoridis; cf. Hesychius pi4227 where the headword (spelled there πτῖλος ) is defined a bit more clearly as "runny and peeled [i.e. suffering dermatolysis?] at the eyes." Adler, Latte and Theodoridis all follow Schleusner in taking this as a comment on Leviticus 21:20 LXX, where the word is used to describe one of a number of conditions that make someone ineligible for making offerings at the temple.
