Headword: *prw/tonos
Adler number: pi,2969
Translated headword: first-new (?)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Means] first, new.
Greek Original:
*prw/tonos: prw=tos ne/os.
Note:
The headword as transmitted, prw/tonos, occurs only here and is faulty. Hesychius pi4023 and again pi4163 gives 'new' as the gloss for prwto/gonos 'first-born'; and later lexica and scholia (references at Photius pi1453 Theodoridis) have both of these glosses for it. Theodoridis declares prwto/gonos to be extracted from Euripides, Hecuba 458; it is used there, in a lyric passage, of a phoenix.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; poetry; tragedy; zoology
