Adler number: pi,2937
Translated headword: pitcher, pitcher-full
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] a sextarius, the measure.[1]
"[...] and placing the bones into a silver pitcher he sent them out to the child to have as a keepsake of his father."[2]
Greek Original:
*pro/xous: ce/sths, to\ me/tron. kai\ e)mbalw\n e)s pro/xoun a)rgura=n ta\ o)sta= e)ce/pemye tw=| paidi\ tou= patro\s keimh/lion e)/xein.
Notes:
The headword, a feminine noun in the nominative singular (perhaps a generic lexical reference, though also, uncontracted, in Homer: see next note) denotes both a vessel and a unit of liquid measure. For a different form of the same word see pi 2936.
[1] = Synagoge pi742, Photius pi1429 Theodoridis, and very similarly already in Hesychius pi4099 and a scholion to Homer, Odyssey 18.397.
[2] Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable. (Adler suggests Aelian, on no discernible basis.) The first half of it is also quoted, without attribution, in Eustathius, Commentary on the Odyssey 2.186.24. In the quotation the present headword noun is in the accusative case and refers to an actual vessel rather than to the unit of measure mentioned in the initial glossing.
