Sophocles [writes]: "going to the visible hill of verdant Demeter carry out the commands of their father in a brief time."
Greek Original:
Πρὸς ὄψιν: πρὸς θεωρίαν. Σοφοκλῆς: τὸ δ' εὐχλόου Δήμητρος εἰς προσόψιον πάγον μολούσα τάσδ' ἐπιστολὰς πατρὶ ταχεῖ πόρευσον ξὺν χρόνῳ.
[1] = Synagoge pi618, Lexica Segueriana 351.19, Photius pi461 Theodoridis; cf. the two glosses at Hesychius theta159. The headword phrase must be quoted from somewhere (other than the quotation given here, on which see next note); Theodoridis mentions with approval the suggestion of Naber and others that the phrase πρὸς ὄψιν might actually be the single word πρόσοψιν , quoted from Thucydides 2.89.8. (But for the phrase, as transmitted, see e.g. Plato, Republic 401C, and many other instances.)
[2] Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus 1600-1602, but here with some errors: the ungrammatical and untranslatable τό at the beginning in place of Sophocles' τώ ('those two') and the imperative πόρευσον ('carry out') in place of Sophocles' ()πόρευσαν ('they carried out'); both errors are probably artifacts of oral dictation. The quotation contains not the headword phrase but a compound adjective composed of the two words that make up the headword phrase: προσόψιον ('visible').
