Adler number: pi,2140
Translated headword: flying about
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[*potw/menai means they who are] spending time.[1] But potw=ntai [means] they fly.[2]
Greek Original:
*potw/menai: diatri/bousai. *potw=ntai de\ pe/tontai.
Notes:
[1] Likewise in Photius (pi1130 Theodoridis) and other lexica, and similarly already in Hesychius pi3162. The headword is present participle, feminine nominative plural, of pota/omai (frequentative of pe/tomai). Unless it simply derives from Hesychius' accusative plural, it must be quoted from somewhere: the likeliest options are Homeric Hymn to Hermes 558 and Aristophanes, Peace 80, but see also Lucian, Podagra 281.
[2] Third person plural, present indicative, of the same verb. From a scholion on Homer, Iliad 2.462, where it occurs; cf. Hesychius pi3163.
Keywords: comedy; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic; poetry
