Adler number: pi,1552
Translated headword: Pigres
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[genitive] *pi/grhtos: name of a river. Also Pigreta, name of a place.
Greek Original:
*pi/grhs, *pi/grhtos: o)/noma potamou=. kai\ *pi/grhta, o)/noma to/pou.
Notes:
In some manuscripts the two descriptors are reversed; and 'Pigreta' is merely the accusative case of the headword. In any event, a river Pigres in Syria is mentioned by Arrian (FGrH 156 F40, 46, 47, 48) and Stephanus of Byzantium s.v. Apameia.
Pigres is also a personal name in Herodotus, Xenophon and elsewhere: cf. pi 1551.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography; historiography
