Adler number: pi,1463
Translated headword: testing
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning him] tempting[1] through words.[2]
Greek Original:
*peirw=nta: peira/zonta dia\ lo/gwn.
Notes:
Same entry in Photius (pi527 Theodoridis), and almost the same in Timaeus' Platonic Lexicon; similarly elsewhere. The headword participle, probably masculine accusative singular rather than neuter plural, must be quoted from somewhere; perhaps from Xenophon, Memorabilia 1.2.29 (on Critias and the young Euthydemus).
For the sexual connotation of this verb, see already pi 1452.
[1] cf. pi 1451.
[2] Timaeus adds pai=da h)\ gunai=ka, "a boy or woman".
