Headword: Πεῖρα
Adler number: pi,1449
Translated headword: trial, test, attempt
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"As the men were going out for foraging and twice the success in the attempts [...]."[1]
Greek Original:
Πεῖρα. ἐξιόντων τῶν ἀνδρῶν ἐπὶ τὰς προνομὰς καὶ δὶς τὸ κατορθοῦν ἐν ταῖς πεῖραις.
Notes:
For this headword noun, here unglossed, see already pi 1448 and again (accusative case) pi 1450.
[1] Quotation not identified by Adler but identifiable via TLG searching as an approximation (and abbreviation) of Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Roman Antiquities 9.20.1. The Suda's "twice" (δὶς ), questioned by Adler (locus haud integer), should be διὰ , "because of" (the reading anyway, Adler reports, of Suda mss GM).
