Adler number: pi,1255
Translated headword: around full agora, forenoon
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] about the fourth or fifth and sixth hour: for then the agora is especially full.[1]
"The plain was unoccupied; then around full agora some men gathered and before [?in the?] din of the enemy, rushing upon those who were taking their breakfast, [...]."[2]
Greek Original:
*peri\ plh/qousan a)gora/n: peri\ w(/ran teta/rthn h)\ pe/mpthn kai\ e(/kthn: to/te ga\r ma/lista plh/qei h( a)gora/. pedi/on h)=n a)xane/s: e)/nqa peri\ plh/qousan a)gora\n h)gei/ronto me/n tines kai\ pro/teron qo/ruboi tw=n polemi/wn, e)pifero/menoi a)/riston ai(roume/nois.
Notes:
Despite occurring in the quotation given (on which see n. 2 below), the headword phrase is more probably extracted from Xenophon, Anabasis 2.1.7; cf. the scholia there. See also 1.8.1 (with another preposition); and cf. alpha 306, sigma 1509.
[1] (Fourth to sixth hour would be from about 10 a.m. to noon.) Likewise in other lexica; references at Photius pi738 Theodoridis. See pi 1745 (which says third hour) and LSJ s.v. a)gora/ IV.
[2] Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable, but Bernhardy -- who also proposed emending qo/ruboi to qoru/bw| -- joined it with the fragment at alpha 4670 (cf. mu 1437).
