Headword: *perh/tria
Adler number: pi,1052
Translated headword: peretria
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] that which[1] sends around word of the time.
Greek Original:
*perh/tria: h( periagge/llousa th\n w(/ran.
Notes:
A baffling entry. LSJ reproduces it (untranslated) in the form given here (where ms V, Adler reports, has pere/tria); in the Synagoge and Photius pi627 Theodoridis the headword is transmitted as peri/tria; Hesychius pi1559 has pera/tria (and a slightly longer gloss, adding tai=s kekthme/nais); otherwise unattested. Theodoridis mentions, though not with approval, G.H.Schaefer's proposed emendation of the headword to the otherwise-unattested thrh/tria.
[1] This opening feminine pronoun is also open to interpretation as 'She who..'.
Keywords: chronology; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; women
