Adler number: pi,1016
Translated headword: pinned up
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] wrapped around with a double cloak, held together with a pin,[1] so that it does not slip off the shoulders. [The word] is attested in Lycurgus in his [speech] Against Timocrates [sic]: "one could see then throughout the city those of the men who had let themselves go in their bodies and were older in years and released from campaigning by the laws wasting away 'on the road to old age', [sc. yet] pinned up in their double cloaks."[2]

Notes:
The headword is perfect middle/passive participle, masculine nominative singular, of porpa/w. It is otherwise unattested; the quotation given here contains a compound form of the participle e)mpeporphme/nous ("pinned up in"), i.e. masculine accusative plural.
For the noun po/rph, see pi 2091.
[1] For this phrase cf. under Hesychius sigma3034.
[2] Lycurgus, Against Leocrates 40. The point being made is that, after the defeat at Chaironeia (338 BCE), even old men were dressing as if for combat.
