[2] Greek Anthology 7.736.6 (Leonidas of Tarentum), on the accommodation to an austere life. Here only the first element of the headword phrase occurs. See Gow and Page (vol. I, 118) and (vol. II, 343-344). Gow and Page observe (vol. II, 343) that the epigram could be autobiographical of the Tarentine. The LSJ s.v. grw=nos II (cavernous, eaten out) notes that when used as a substantive--as in this epigram--the connotation is of a hole in a rock (web address 1). Along this line, Gow and Page further note that the excerpt reinforces the theme of equanimity to poverty; a man of more than simple means would not work grain by hand over a rock hole, but would possess a mill or at least a mortar and pestle for preparing meal (vol. II, 344). Their remark appears to overlook the fact that the excerpt concerns the kneading of pastry dough, not the crushing and mixing of grains. However, a respectable culinary utensil for kneading dough was the ka/rdopos (kneading-trough), which in some configurations was more of a small, flat tub, and was used for kneading and mixing barley groats; it might not indeed be found among the cooking tools in a poor man's hut; cf. kappa 372.
