The Attic [writers] put a circumflex on the final syllable of a(pla= ['simple'] and dipla= ['twofold'] and pollapla= ['manifold'] and all such [words]: a)rgura= ['silver'], xrusa= ['golden'] and keramea= ['ceramic'], from kerameou=n, and foinika= ['purple'], from foinikou=n.
Greek Original:
*foinika=: to\ a(pla= kai\ dipla= kai\ pollapla= kai\ pa/nta ta\ toiau=ta perispw=sin oi( *)attikoi/: a)rgura=, xrusa= kai\ keramea=, a)po\ tou= kerameou=n: kai\ foinika=, a)po\ tou= foinikou=n.
Note:
This entry deals with the accentuation of a class of adjectives the endings of which normally exhibit contraction in Attic dialect. The headword is one such adjective. It and the other examples are the neuter plural nominative/accusative forms, though for the final two examples (which includes the headword), the neuter singular nominative/accusative form is given for clarity. Photius, Lexicon alpha2436 Theodoridis, has the same entry filed under the first example, a(pla=, as does the Synagoge (alpha1799), except that there, and in the corresponding entry of the Suda, alpha 3221, the word that serves as the headword here is spelled in the alternative (and less common) form foinikia=. This text appears in the Suda no fewer than three other times under the rubric of different examples in the list: delta 1258 (dipla=), pi 1871 (pollapla=) and chi 553 (xrusa=). These entries, as well as the present entry, are absent from or placed differently in the various mss, and are probably copied from alpha 3221.
