Headword: Οἶσε
Adler number: omicroniota,170
Translated headword: brought
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] led to, gathered.[1] "To herself she brought wealth not easily scorned; but him, pining little by little with love, she released from the present situation."[2]
Greek Original:
Οἶσε: προσήγαγε, συνῆξεν. ἑαυτῇ μὲν πλοῦτον οὐκ εὐκαταφρόνητον οἶσεν, ἐκεῖνον δὲ κατὰ βαιὸν τηκόμενον τῷ ἔρωτι ἀπήλλαξε τῶν τῇδε.
Notes:
[1] The headword comes from the future of φέρω ; οἶσε is attested in Homer and Aristophanes as an imperative (see LSJ s.v., theta 489, kappa 1604, sigma 952). Here it is used as an aorist indicative, probably from an interpretation of the imperative as aorist. Cf. alpha 2780.
[2] Aelian fr. 126e Domingo-Forasté (123 Hercher), quoted more fully at upsilon 35.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; economics; gender and sexuality; women
