Headword: Οἶος
Adler number: omicroniota,152
Translated headword: alone
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] only.[1] From ἴος , whence [come] both ἴα and μία .[1] But ἴος [comes] from σύ ["thou"], , ἴος . Or from εἷς .[2]
Greek Original:
Οἶος: μόνος. παρὰ τὸ ἴος: ἐξ οὗ καὶ ἴα καὶ μία. ἴος δὲ ἀπὸ τοῦ σύ: ἴ: ἴος. ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ εἷς.
Notes:
[1] cf. omicroniota 151, omicroniota 189.
[2] ἴα (iota 1) and μία are unrelated forms used in different dialects for the feminine nominative singular of εἷς "one" (epsiloniota 218). From ἴος the dative ἰῷ is attested in epic; with ἴα , this probably comes from the pronominal stem i- as in Latin is, id. See LSJ s.v. εἷς . It is not clear what the personal pronoun σύ and the particle (?) are doing here.
Kuster would delete the last sentence of this entry (from ἴος to εἷς ).
