[Meaning] in no way. And Thucydides in [book] 5 [sc. uses the word].[1] Also Homer: "o old man, in no way do I, at least, think that this will be brought to completion."[2]
Greek Original:
Οὔπως: οὐδένα τρόπον. καὶ Θουκυδίδης ε#. καὶ Ὅμηρος: ὦ γέρον, οὔ πως ἔγωγε τοῦτο τελέεσθαι ὀί̈ω.
Same entry in Photius, Lexicon omicron671 Theodoridis, regarded as deriving ultimately from Aelius Dionysius (omicron41).
[1] Thucydides uses οὔπως just this once in his entire work, at 5.15.2: ἤρξαντο μὲν οὖν μετὰ τὴν ἅλωσιν αὐτῶν πράσσειν, ἀλλ' οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι οὔπως ἤθελον, εὖ φερόμενοι, ἐπὶ τῇ ἴσῃ καταλύεσθαι . "Thus they began straightaway to take action after capture of those men, but the Athenians, doing well, were not at all willing to settle the dispute on equal terms".
[2] An approximation of Homer, Odyssey 3.226: ὦ γέρον, οὔ πω τοῦτο ἔπος τελέεσθαι ὀίω "O old man, in no way do I think that this word will be brought to completion." Modern editors (e.g. Allen; von der Mühll = TLG) tend to prefer to print οὔ πω following the codices.
