Headword: Οὐλοθυτεῖν
Adler number: omicron,907
Translated headword: to offer a whole sacrifice, to strew sacred barley
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to pour barley-groats on the sacrifices. For they used to call the barley-groats ουλαί in contrast to the barley-cakes, which were barley ground[1] by the mill; for formerly they used to bend[2] the barley-groats when eating them, the processing of them having not yet been discovered. And up to the present time those who sacrifice pour barley-groats on the libations, since [they are] a symbol of the ancient food; but the round cakes of the recent era, that is of the subsequent [one].
Notes:
cf. scholia A and D on Homer, Iliad 1.449, where οὐλοχύτας (sic: accusative plural of οὐλοχύται ) occurs (web address 1). See also psi 35.
[1] Adler reports that ms F reads κατεψητισμένα (as at psi 35); the other manuscripts have κατεψηνισμένα . Various emendations have been suggested, all with essentially the same meaning: κατεψηγμένα Stephanus (Henri Estienne); κατεψαισμένα Hemsterhuis, κατεψημένα Toup.
[2] Adler reports that ms M offers the variant ἐκάπτοντο "they used to gulp down" and G reads ἐκόπτοντο ; the editio princeps of Chalcocondyles substituted the active form ἔκοπτον "they used to chop/pound."
