Headword: Οὐκ ἂν ὀρθῶς
Adler number: omicron,851
Translated headword: not rightly
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"[Not rightly,] etc." It should doubtless be read thus: "you would not have sinned if you made the offering rightly, but did not divide it rightly: keep calm."
Greek Original:
Οὐκ ἂν ὀρθῶς, καὶ ἑξῆς. οὕτως δὴ ἀναγνωστέον: οὐκ ἂν ὀρθῶς προσενέγκῃς, ὀρθῶς δὲ μὴ διέλῃς, ἥμαρτες: ἡσύχασον.
Notes:
Genesis 4.7 LXX. This confusing passage (addressed by God to Cain) is usually interpreted as a question: "Did you not sin, if you brought your offering rightly but did not divide it rightly?" Note especially Photius' discussion of various possible interpretations, in Epistulae et Amphilochia 71.
Adler reports that this entry is lacking from mss AF; she prints it as an interpolation.
Keywords: Christianity; dialects, grammar, and etymology; ethics; religion
