Adler number: omicron,845
Translated headword: it is not idly done
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning [done] not in vain.[1]
Greek Original:
*ou)k a)/llws poiei=tai: a)nti\ tou= ou) ma/thn.
Notes:
The headword phrase as transmitted employs the present indicative middle/passive, third person singular, of the contract verb poie/w, I make, do, act); see LSJ s.v. Nevertheless, it has been taken to be generated by Plato, Phaedrus 232A (web address 1): Phaedrus lectures Socrates that a lover is proud to show publicly that he has not toiled (pepo/nhtai: perfect indicative middle/passive, third person singular, of pone/w, I perform through toil; see LSJ s.v.) in vain for his newfound passion. See further, next note.
[1] The Suda's entry is identical to that in Photius' Lexicon (omicron630 Theodoridis), except that the latter transmits ponei=tai, present indicative middle/passive, third person singular, of pone/w; cf. Timaeus, Platonic Lexicon omicron998a11 and Synagoge 920a. The scholia to Plato, Phaedrus 232A, provide essentially the same gloss.
