Nevertheless, it has been taken to be generated by Plato, Phaedrus 232A (web address 1): Phaedrus lectures Socrates that a lover is proud to show publicly that he has not toiled (pepo/nhtai: perfect indicative middle/passive, third person singular, of pone/w, I perform through toil; see LSJ s.v.) in vain for his newfound passion.
