Headword: Ὀστρακισμός
Adler number: omicron,716
Translated headword: ostracism
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Those most hostile to the people [sc. in classical Athens] used to be ostracized and [thus?] convicted; for the name of the man about to be exiled was written on pieces of pot [ostraka].
Note:
Beyond explaining the etymology of the word, a feeble entry (from Photius, Lexicon omicron572 Theodoridis, itself taken over from Hesychius omicron1461). See rather omicron 717, which, inter alia, makes a proper distinction between ostracism and exile. See also epsilon 1810, epsilon 1811.
