Adler number: omicron,678
Translated headword: appearing to be suffering harm
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
["(They) appearing to be suffering harm,] but in truth relieved from harm": meaning appearing to be suffering badly, etc.
Greek Original:
*(/osa me\n tw=| dokei=n kakopaqou=sai, to\ d' a)lhqe\s kakw=n a)pallagei=sai: a)nti\ tou= tw=| me\n dokei=n kakw=s paqou=sai, kai\ ta\ e(ch=s.
Notes:
Almost identical entry in the Lexica Segueriana (321.18) and Photius, Lexicon (omicron549 Theodoridis), though there the first participle in the long headword phrase (repeated in the glossing phrase) is kakwqei=sai; the Suda has kakopaqou=sai and kakw=s paqou=sai. Either way, the unidentifiable headword phrase must be quoted from somewhere.
These participles are in the feminine nominative plural, but they are less likely to refer to women than to impersonal things that are grammatically feminine. For kakwqei=sai cf. e.g. Pausanias 1.20.7 (Athens); for kakopaqou=sai cf. e.g. Polybius 5.30.5 (cities).
