Headword: *(ormi/skos
Adler number: omicron,604
Translated headword: mini-necklace
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Mini-necklace] and cords: an adornment around the neck, ear-rings, (?)lowering-cords.[1]
Greek Original:
*(ormi/skos kai\ *(/ormoi: peritraxh/lios ko/smos, e)nw/tia, xalasth/ria.
Notes:
This double headword, as printed by Adler, consists of the nominative singular of the diminutive o(rmi/skos (cf. under upsilon 477) and the nominative (and vocative) plural of o(/rmos; see LSJ s.vv. Note however that in ms F, and the equivalent entry in Photius (Lexicon omicron498 Theodoridis), both nouns are singular.
[1] The headwords are identically glossed at Lexica Segueriana 320.27 and in the Synagoge. Photius has an identical gloss for two singular substantives: see above. Hesychius s.v. o(rmi/skoi and s.v. o(/rmos provides similar glosses. John Philoponus, De vocabulis quae diversum significatum exhibent secundum differentiam accentus s.v. o(/rmos interprets this paroxytone (accent on the penult; Smyth, 157) form as meaning limh/n (harbor, cf. omicron 605) and transmits only the first glossing phrase for an oxytone (accent on the ultima, ibid.) form, o(rmo/s; cf. Etymologicum Magnum 631.30 (Kallierges). The third glossing term, xalasth/ria (neuter plural), is extremely rare, and unless it is misplaced here it must have some meaning other than the one attested in Appian (ropes for lowering a portcullis).
