Lycurgus [in the] second [speech] Against Lykophron [sc. uses the word].[1] Perhaps the fence, that is the surrounding-fence and the wall, is so called; from [the verb] to restrain, ἐρύκειν , or from its being a fence [ἕρκος ]. Homer [writes]: "having gathered stones for the vineyard herkos".[2]

Ὁρκάνη: Λυκοῦργος κατὰ Λυκόφρονος β#. μήποτε ὁ φραγμός, τουτέστι τὸ περίφραγμα καὶ ἡ αἱμασιά, οὕτως καλεῖται. παρὰ τὸ ἐρύκειν, ἢ παρὰ τὸ ἕρκος εἶναι. Ὅμηρος: αἱμασιὰς λέξαντες ἀλωῆς ἔμμεναι ἕρκος.
