Headword: Ὀρεοπολῶ
Adler number: omicron,532
Translated headword: I wander in the mountains
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I am involved with mountains.[1] But ὀρεωπολῶ [means] I am involved with donkeys.[2]
[sc. The latter comes] from ὀρεύς , [genitive] ὀρέως ["mule"], which means half-donkey.[3]
Notes:
[1] cf. ὀρειπολῶ at omicron 551.
[2] This entry aims to distinguish a mountain-word from a mule-word. Chantraine is unsure why compounds of ὀρεύς have an omega for the connecting vowel (cf. omicron 531). Adler reports a similar entry in the Ambrosian Lexicon.
[3] See omicron 552.
