[A dream] differs from a vision-in-sleep [e)nu/pnion];[1] for it is something else and not the same. And yet calling a dream a vision-in-sleep would be fine; but when someone speaks technically, he must use each word in its proper sense, and the one [which is] unimportant and does not foretell anything, being powerful only during sleep, and coming into being because of an irrational desire or an exceeding fear or satiety or poverty, must be called e)nu/pnion, whereas the other which is still effective and probable after the sleep is a good or bad dream. In many cases [sc. both of] the nouns must be used, just as Homer [says]: "a dream from heaven came to me in my sleep".[2]
