Headword: Ὁμηρεύειν
Adler number: omicron,244
Translated headword: to be hostage
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] to be in harmony.[1]
"The Samians, although their young men were being held hostage, nevertheless did not continue, but revolted against those Macedonians who were guarding the city."[2]
[1] Same glossing in other lexica; references at Photius omicron278 Theodoridis. For the sense suggested see Hesiod, Theogony 39.
[2] The quotation--source unidentifiable, but evidently from a narrative history--illustrates not the headword verb ὁμηρεύω but its compound ἐξομηρεύω , for which see epsilon 1789 and epsilon 1790. Favuzzi (2018) 282-287 reasonably places this entry in the category of those where (a) the headword-plus-synonym and (b) the supposedly illustrative quotation are mismatched. Element a does belong here, but b belongs immediately before epsilon 1789. Favuzzi also finds sufficient resemblances between the content of the quotation and what Thuc. 1.115-3-5 reports about the revolt of Samos in 440-439 BC to replace 'Macedonians' with 'Athenians'.
