Headword: Ὀλυμπιάς
Adler number: omicron,214
Translated headword: Olympiad
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
This is what the Greeks call the competition held every four years, because of the day which comes from the three seasons of the year in each four-year period of the cycles of the sun.[1]
The first Olympiad was established in the time of Solomon, for a (?)universal festival of Zeus.[2]
Notes:
See also omicron 215.
[1] George the Monk, Chronicon 306.8-11. It is far from clear what he means, especially by 'three' seasons; perhaps the number is corrupt.
[2] Source unknown. (For Solomon see sigma 772, sigma 773, sigma 774. The traditional date of the first Olympiad is 776 BCE, considerably later than any plausible date for Solomon.)
