Translation:
"A boulder from a siege-machine fell upon the inventor of the apparatus, shattered his mouth and put out both his eyes."[1]
Herodotus [writes]: "and as the barbarians approached the gates, they threw down boulders."[2]
And elsewhere: "[they] rolling large boulders down from the crest [sc. of the hill]." [Meaning] whole circular stones.[3]

Ὁλοίτροχος: λίθος ὁλοίτροχος ἀπὸ μηχανῆς εἰς τὸν εὑρετὴν τοῦ τεχνήματος ἐμπεσὼν τοῦ τε στόματος ἐξήραξε καὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐξέωσεν ἄμφω. Ἡρόδοτος: καὶ δὴ προσιόντων τῶν βαρβάρων πρὸς τὰς πύλας, ὁλοιτρόχους ἀφίεσαν. καὶ αὖθις: ὁλοιτρόχους μεγάλους κατὰ τοῦ λόφου κυλίοντες. λίθους ὅλους τροχοειδεῖς.

[1] Source (and individual) unknown; transmitted (like both the following) via the Excerpts made for Constantine Porphyrogenitus. For τοῦ τε στόματος ("of his mouth" in the genitive), Küster offered the emendation τό τε στόμα ("his mouth" in the accusative); Hemsterhuys instead suggested supplying τοὺς ὀδόντας ("his teeth") after the verb.

[3] Again the quotation is unidentifiable, but for the gloss cf. Etymologicum Magnum 622.42 and Apollonius' Homeric Lexicon 120.13.
