Ὄχανος: τὸ κράτημα τῆς ἀσπίδος. ὄχοις Ἀκεσταίοισιν ἐμβεβὼς πόδα. καὶ Ὀχάνοις, δεσμοῖς.
[1] This noun is related to the verb ἔχω . At Herodotus 1.171 the word is neuter ὄχανον (plural ὄχανα ). Shield-grips were allegedly invented by the Carians.
[2] Sophocles fr. 611 (672 Radt); cf. Hesychius omicron2055 and Photius, Lexicon omicron725 Theodoridis. The noun ὄχος comes from the root fεχ- .
[3] Likewise or similarly in other lexica (references in Photius omicron726 Theodoridis), and in a gloss on Herodotus 2.141.5, where τὰ ὄχανα occurs. (The dative plural must be quoted from somewhere else.)
