Headword: Ὀφλίσκουσι
Adler number: omicron,1018
Translated headword: they incur a fine [at law]
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[ὀφλίσκουσι ] and [sc. also attested is] ὄφλουσι : [both meaning] they are liable for a debt.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] ὀφλισκάνω .[2]
Greek Original:
Ὀφλίσκουσι καὶ Ὄφλουσι: χρεωστοῦσι. καὶ Ὀφλισκάνω.
Notes:
The headwords are variants for the present indicative active, third person plural, of the verb proffered later in the entry, ὀφλισκάνω (I owe, am liable to pay, incur a fine); see generally LSJ s.v., and n. 2 below. The lemma's first verb form, evidently extracted from somewhere, is attested only in lexicography, and the second form occurs only in later texts; its first attestation is Dio Chrysostom, Orationes 31.143.3.
[In her critical apparatus Adler notes that ms G transmits Ὀφλισκάνουσι .]
[1] The gloss is of the same grammatical form as the headword, but from the verb χρεωστέω , I am liable for a debt; see LSJ s.v. and cf. generally chi 463, chi 464, and omicron 999. The headwords are identically glossed in the Synagoge, Photius' Lexicon (omicron717 Theodoridis), and Lexica Segueriana 323.5.
[2] Other forms of ὀφλισκάνω occur at omicron 1013, omicron 1015, omicron 1016, omicron 1019, omega 279, and pi 977. There are cognate substantives at omicron 1014 and omicron 1017. Cf. ps.-Herodian, Partitiones 104.8, ps.-Zonaras 1490, and Hesychius s.vv. ὀφλάνειν (gloss), present active infinitive, and οφλισκάνοντες , present active participle, masculine nominative (and vocative) plural. Adler also cites the Lexicon de Spiritu, L.C. Valckenaer, ed., and the unedited lexicon of Codex Laurentianus 59.16.
