Headword: *naukrari/a
Adler number: nu,57
Translated headword: naukrary, naucrary
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Demosthenes in the [speech] Against Timocrates [sc. uses the word].[1] But perhaps, in the Atticizing writers, it is better taken as naukratitika/ ["of Naukratis"], so that [the adjective] would stem from a Naukratite vessel, or Naukratite voyagers. For Naukratis was, of old, a trading-post in Egypt. But if [the correct reading] is *naukrarika/, that would be "of the archons"; for long ago they used to call the archons nau/kraroi, as Herodotos shows in [book] five of his Histories.[2]
Perhaps the term naukrarika/ comes from the tip [krai=ra] of a ship [nau=s].

Notes:
The first paragraph of this entry comes from Harpokration s.v. naukrarika/. In the Suda, as already in Photius (nu38 Theodoridis), the headword has become naukrari/a, which makes less sense of the suggestion in the entry that the word be emended to *naukratitika/ in Atticizing writers.
For Naukratis cf. nu 58.
